Broken branch, peeled back bark and scars on small tree (hawthorn?) in winter

Hawthorn I think.

    Hello Angie. It does. Though I'm not sure. Machines go along once or twice a year stripping away branches which stick out too far. I suspect this little tree isn't so much old as suffering from growing too close to the path.
