Hello Andy. I agree. It's one of those situations in which the photograph belies the reality. Of course, I can't speak for the man who was standing there - I don't know who he is or what he was thinking. But a few yards away he'd be able to buy an ice-cream. (Not that ice-cream is always the cure for loneliness!)
The scene gives me the feeling of loneliness.
