BOTTLE ON A BEACH

Its a great picture but I always find it sad seeing rubbish and cigarette butts etc. on the beach.

I understand, Hermes. But with rubbish like this - if you think of it as part of the flotsam and jetsam which has been thrown up by the sea, it takes a different atmosphere. I doubt there's a message in it (!) but . . . where has it come from?

It is specially evocative round here because there used to be lots of wrecks (some by chance, some engineered) and people used to gather up the cargo that was washed ashore. Even rubbish, if you were poor, could be of use. Imagine being penniless, walking the strand - and finding such a useful container!

Also, on this beach, there are sometimes the remains of small bonfires - and circles of cigarette ends. The cigarette ends are, I admit, pretty disgusting - but they mean people have been down there chatting and being sociable in the dark. Sitting on a rock, listening to the sea - a much more romantic image than hanging round a lampost with conversation drowned by traffic.

There! I took the photo because of its colour and shape . . . and your comment has sent me to all this!

I enlarged the picture to full screen and the detail is amazing, especially in the composition of the rocks and the markings on the sand. The light is brilliant too, you manage to capture things very well Lucy.

I appreciate flotsam and jetsam exist but as a beach tourist (I only get to see them on holiday) I prefer a clean beach.
Sad and unrealistic I know but until I achieve my dream of living by the sea I will cling to my rosy view :-)
