Interesting photo of this stump which must be at least fifty years old, perhaps much older. You can see the history of dry and wet years in those rings.

You are right.I wrote a post about the rings in this newly sawn down tree on my other blog - http://tinyurl.com/n9r25nd .The outer rings are very, very narrow, right jammed up against each other . . . why this is and how this contributed to the tree's demise is in that post.(Hope that sounds sufficiently mysterious to encourage you to take a look!)
