Hello Pat. I'm interested too in the diversity of colours - even of shapes - in this cobbled ground. There are masses of cobbled streets and paths in this area - mostly dating from the late nineteenth and the first part of the twentieth centuries I guess - generally of a similar stone to each other - though not necessarily of regular sizes. This cobbling is comparatively recent. Yet someone's gone to the trouble of finding interesting contrasts and laying them there. I think it may even be a municipal paving so perhaps the workers just used what happened to be at hand. That it worked out so well could be chance.

Love this photo! Especially so because of the diversity of the cobbles.
