STILL LIFE - RENOVATION

Insulation material under arch.

Taken in an old mill which was being converted into a block of flats.

This seems to be the way of things these days Lucy, old mills, factories etc being converted to apartments or homes. I think it's a great idea if done retaining some of the character of the original architecture ✨

I cannot help ponder on what millions do now to pay to live in these places!

Hello Perth Daily Photo. There are masses of derelict mills round here - and other buildings. They won't all be rescued but hopefully in re-purposing them the area will retain something of its distinctiveness as well as be rescued from decline. With this particular mill . . . I grump about the choice of window panes and the way they've changed the pitch of the roof. It's changed it from a dramatic ruin to something rather boring. But . . . .

Hello Coline. Your comment inspired me to look into the price of the flats and I find a one bedroom flat can be rented there for £104 a week or bought for £74,000 so I suppose they are not at the upper end of the market. (The photos of interiors show them to be unfortunately cramped and boring.) I expect some in the area will be swisher.

I love that photo! It looks almost like a quilting room being redone, with rolls of batting out of the way until it's finished. LOL I know it isn't batting, probably insulation of some kind. The way the light shines is magical. Great photo. I read your comment about the rent. Here things rent by the month, usually, so that translates to about $555.00 a month, and that isn't bad rent for a nice one-bedroom.

My entire house, though, cost about Ł74,000 , and I now only owe Ł62,305, so buying a 1 bedroom for that much seems hugely expensive to me. I do know that your living expense is higher than ours, but that seems really disproportionate. I have 458 sq. meters in two stories, and a huge yard. I DO live in one of the least costly cities in America. It would not be possible to have what I have in San Francisco, New York, Boston, L.A., Atlanta, Houston, etc. =)

Anyway, thanks for a beautiful photo today!

Hello Susan. I'm really pleased you like this photo as it's one of my favourites. I too like the colours, the lighting and the shapes. It seems very peaceful somehow.

I don't know much about property prices but it seems flats can be disproportionately expensive when compared with houses. I suppose people are going for the convenience. Perhaps it's something to do with competition between people needing properties with only one bedroom? After reading your comment I went and looked at a property site and discover I can make neither head nor tail of them!

Lucy, I can't say that's any surprise! The same thing is true here. I don't know what makes a smaller house two blocks further worth $10,000 more than the larger house two blocks the other way. The neighborhoods look equal to me! Just strange. I'm glad I don't have to buy a house now, just maintain this one. That's hard enough!
