STUMP

Stump of newly felled tree. Possibly cherry.

Could have been better composed but the colours are so lovely I don't want to miss this picture out. In theory I could go back but the wood will have dried - and it's on a very steep bank so I don't know that I'd do any better with the angle anyway.

All those years of history recorded on the stump. Sad seeing a tree stump.

Hello Taken for Granted. It is sad. A whole little group of trees has been felled. Some of them, apparently, were rotten - but certainly not all. A neighbour tells me the reason being given is that some burglars hid behind them when engaged upon robbing industrial units so the owners wanted to open up the view. This reason doesn't make a lot of sense to me in the context but . . . well, they've gone.

The composition seems fine to me, and the colors ARE beautiful. That one is particularly lovely, with a nice even bark ring around it.

Tree stumps, in and of themselves, don't make me sad. Sometimes there's a good reason to take out a tree. I have at least two, probably four, which need to come out in my yard - one dead, and three that pose hazards to my house, in the right circumstances, at their ages.

In forests, it can be healthy to remove some of the trees, and prevent fires, too. The stump you've shown evidently isn't from a forest, maybe not even a small woods. I hate seeing entire forests come down, but clear cutting here isn't done any more, and replanting does take place, though old growth forest and new growth aren't exactly the same.

I marvel at tree rings. All the years the tree has witnessed recorded in the rings. I've found that counting them is tricky, though! =)
