PIGEONS IN THE SNOW AT HEBDEN BRIDGE

Pigeons seeking crumbs in the snow in Hebden Bridge, Calderdale, West Yorkshire. 18th January 2023

To take this photo was more complicated than you might expect for the pigeons kept thinking I was there to be perched upon and kept landing on my shoulder and my arm. They kept flying directly at my face as well - thinking perhaps I was eating the camera and they'd like a bite too.
I always admire their feet.

Pigeons can be a problem at times, but I admit I like watching them too!

All birds are interesting to watch. Pigeons always make the best of their environment.

Hello Gardens at Waters East. I don't know why it is but although there's a huge flock of pigeons based on a derelict mill at the other end of the street where I live, pigeons rarely come to the immediate area around my house - so when I came across this group by the river in Hebden Bridge I appreciated anew the fantastic colours in their feathers and the delightful way they potter around . . . their cooing is almost as soothing as the gentle chatter of chickens too (though I think this lot were silent, I wasn't paying the right kind of attention) and if it hadn't meant I had to move on and eat my picnic lunch elsewhere I might even have enjoyed them trying to sit on me!

Hello Taken for Granted. That's an interesting thought. Pigeons do always seem to be totally at home, wherever they are. They really seem to feel they belong and if disturbed simply move aside briefly then return to where they were before and continue whatever it was they were doing - whereas other birds would fly away.

They're okay providing they keep away from the allotments, which they don't. xx

Hello Flighty. . . and fields. When I lived in Dorset I'd see huge herds of pigeons working their way across newly seeded fields. It's a wonder any crops came up at all.
